Spicy Cinnamon French Toast - The Deen Brothers Cookbook

1 cup packed light brown sugar
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted
1 1/2 cup whole milk
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 
Pinch of salt
Pinch of cayenne pepper
12 slices whole wheat, challah, or French bread

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a bowl, whisk together the sugar and melted butter. Spread the mixture in a large rimmed baking pan. Set aside.

In a large bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, vanilla, lemon juice, cinnamon, salt and cayenne pepper. Dip each slice of bread in the egg mixture and soak for 30 seconds. Transfer to the baking pan. Bake about 25 minutes or until golden, turning halfway through baking.

Makes 6 servings.
